In my humble opinion, the main "feature" is not actually a feature
but the fact that many things that were previously handled in a
different ways, using proprietary vendor-specific approaches
(i.e. car rental, air tickets, invoices and a huge etc.) is now
part of the standard.
For example, there are now datasets (both in TLV and bitmap format)
that let you place information such as "Trip leg arrival time",
"Auto customer service toll-free phone number", etc. that were
previously transmitted by other means (private fields and subfields
here and there).
It seems to be highly compatible with previous versions, so I think
you can easily transport these compound fields in an opaque way
using packagers already available in jPOS.
I'd like to read what other's have to say about this subject,
as well as its relation with IFX and ANS X9.15. If you were to
start a new switch implementation (AFAIK, many jPOS developers have
that goal), which one would you use?
